If you have assessed the roof and feel confident tackling this then here’s a step-by-step guide:

Tools & Materials Needed:

  • New downpipe (same diameter as the old one)
  • Hacksaw (if trimming is needed)
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Screws or brackets
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or marker
  • Ladder
  • Sealant (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Remove the Old Downpipe

  • Inspect the pipe – Look for screws, brackets, or clips securing it to the wall.
  • Unscrew or unclip it – Start at the top and work your way down.
  • Detach from the gutter outlet – If it’s stuck, gently twist it off.
  • Check for damage – Inspect the gutter outlet and wall brackets for wear.

2. Prepare the New Downpipe

  • Measure the old pipe – Ensure the new one matches in length and diameter.
  • Cut if necessary – Use a hacksaw to trim it to size. Smooth edges with sandpaper.
  • Attach bends or elbows – If needed to direct water flow properly.

3. Install the New Downpipe

  • Attach to the gutter outlet – Push or slot the pipe into place.
  • Secure with brackets – Fix it to the wall using screws and existing or new brackets. Space them about 1-1.5 meters apart.
  • Ensure proper alignment – The pipe should direct water into the drain or soakaway.

4. Check for Leaks & Finish Up

  • Test with water – Pour water from the gutter to check for leaks.
  • Seal joints if needed – Use waterproof sealant if there are small gaps.
  • Tidy up – Remove debris and check for stability.

We would suggest you call a roofer if:

  1. The gutter system is severely damaged – If the gutter brackets, fascia, or soffits are rotting, sagging, or broken, a roofer can assess and repair the full system.

  2. You have a multi-story home – If the downpipe is high up and requires special ladders or scaffolding, a professional is safer than DIY.

  3. The gutter outlet is clogged or leaking – If water is backing up, a roofer can check for blockages or damage that may require repairs beyond just the downpipe.

  4. You notice water damage on walls or foundations – If water isn’t draining properly, a roofer can inspect the whole drainage system to prevent future problems.

  5. You’re uncomfortable with heights – If you’re unsure about using ladders or working at height, hiring a roofer ensures safety.

If it’s just a simple replacement and you feel confident, you can DIY. But for bigger issues or safety concerns, get in touch for a free quote.
